What is a Dinghy?
A small, light boat that you generally rig ashore and launch every time you go sailing. Because of this, dinghies are easily transported. They are great fun to sail with an immediate response. However, there are some types of boats and also conditions where you will need to be quick and agile to balance the boat, dinghies might be just the thing for you.
Possibly the quickest and easiest way to learn to sail is at Ballyronan on one of our Laser Stratos boats which are easy to handle and generally light to launch and transport. Learning to sail as a beginner starts here, the techniques taught on a Dinghy will follow you through all your sailing life and we will start you on a course to ensure you’re up and away as soon as possible, in a safe and professional manner.
What can Ballyronan Boat Club do for me?
Following on from the early courses and after you complete your RYA 1&2, you can choose one of the five advanced modules to suit your sailing interests, e.g. Start Racing, Day Sailing, Seamanship Skills, Sailing with Spinnakers and Performance Sailing. These are available to both adults and young people and regular classes are held at Ballyronan. We also offer VHF (Marine 2 way radios) and First Aid courses for those wanting to advance their skills.
What equipment do I need to get started?
Don’t panic you won’t have to spend a fortune! The chances are you own or know someone who owns a wetsuit, that’s a start, our beginner courses starts around May, so the water isn’t too cold and a wetsuit is more than ample to get you going. Gloves are also good to have but not essential, we can supply you with a life jacket to get started, however after a while you will want to gather you gear as you go and spend wisely. Being part of a club means we can advise you where to go, what to buy and how much to spend. But like the training you buy as you need.
When do you sail?
Most Saturdays (weather permitting) at Ballyronan Boat Club from 10.30am – 2.30pm dinghy races are held, so why not come down and have a look first, if you’re interested come and talk to us. We would love to have you on board.
